Hardships
All miners had to face the hardships of the gold mines, but no two miners, or miner groups, had the same chain of bad afflictions. For example, when miners wanted to come to California, they did not just show up there. They either came by wagon or by ship. Therefore, if miners decided to go by wagon, they might go too early, and run out of food for the people, as well as the oxen. The oxen would then die to starvation. They also faced their wagon breaking because it wasn’t strong enough. These miners would end up walking back to where they started.
But just because it was hard to go by wagon, doesn’t mean going by ship was any easier. There could have been too many people with too much luggage. Therefore the ship could sink and the people who survived had to find a way to get to shore. Some of the boats even crashed!
When the miners finally reached California, they found the hardest of all problems! The miners, who had arrived as soon as 2 weeks before, could be on the way to getting malnutrition. Others faced sunburns, diseases, and in the winter they would especially get snowed in. Some days a flood could cause destruction to their mining equipment. Some could have either died or gotten really effected by hunger, dehydration, or frostbite.
No matter what the consequence was, all miners were affected by nature’s hardships!
